Integrating Yoga Into Patients' Care Plans

Did you know that yoga is becoming increasingly “prescribed” by doctors, chiropractors, acupuncturists, psychologists, physical therapists, massage therapists, and other healthcare and wellness professionals? Even if they’re not calling it yoga, they often recommend breathing practices, relaxation practices, and gentle stretching to their patients and clients to help with their stress, anxiety, physical tension, aches, and pains.

Emily and I recorded a video for healthcare and wellness professionals, to give them specific guidance about how to effectively assign yoga homework to their patients and clients, who most likely have never practiced yoga and may even be skeptical about it.

The idea was to present the yoga practices in a way that feels easy and accessible so that anyone can do them and benefit from them.

Even if you’re not be a healthcare or wellness professional, I wanted to share this with you because you may know someone (or lots of someones) who you believe can benefit from a little yoga.

Believe it or not, people can be intimidated by the idea of trying yoga, and especially practicing yoga in a yoga studio. This little video can give them an introduction to how to do a simple yoga practice at home.

Even better, we created a yoga cheat sheet to print out and use at home or at the office for quick reference. These poses are so easy that they can even be practiced in the car while you’re sitting at a red light!

The downloadable cheat sheets are available here. Please note that, while the content of each of the documents is the same, the titles are customized for different patient/client scenarios. Please feel free to share printed copies, the electronic file, and/or the link to this page.

Exhausted?

I really believe yoga teachers should walk their talk. They should have a regular yoga practice, they should manage their stress, eat well, exercise, get enough sleep, etc. And by that standard, sometimes I wonder how good of a yoga teacher I really am. I've been known to get pretty stressed out on occasion. (I wonder how much worse it would be if I didn't practice yoga!?) I don't always eat well and I don't exercise (outside of my yoga practice). Lately I've been working on getting more sleep, so that's a plus.

The bottom line is that sometimes LIFE gets in the way of good self-care. And that's just, well, life.

So I created this video for you, inspired by my own recent period of stress and exhaustion. It feels really lovely to lay down on the floor and treat yourself to some restorative yoga.

This practice can help you release your stress and, depending on the time of day and your needs, provide you with a gentle infusion of energy to help you get through the day or help you settle down and prepare your body and mind for a good night's sleep.

Next time you're stressed and/or exhausted, or even just tired at the end of a long day, I encourage you to try out this 12-minute video, then let me know about your experience in the Comments section below. I bet you'll feel like the world's a little bit of a better place by the end of the practice.

Also, please feel free to share the love by forwarding this video to a friend. Just use email share link at the bottom of this post.

Lots of love, Zelinda
