Before I was a yoga teacher I was an engineer and a marketer at a couple of high tech companies. I know all about herding cats, drinking from a fire hose, and staying up late to polish up slides for the presentation due first thing in the morning. And I also how it feels to sit at a desk all day typing on a laptop. After a few hours your neck, shoulders, and back get tense and sometimes even start to hurt. And the lower body can experience tightness in the legs and hips from sitting too long.
Believe it or not, office workers can get repetitive stress injuries. We repeat the same movements (or in this case postures) so long that we get a stiff neck and shoulders or a sore back. We may not think of these as injuries, but they are!
So what can you do about it? Quit your job and become a yoga teacher! No, I'm kidding :)
You can do a little bit of yoga practice during your workday to get your body moving. In just a few short minutes you can improve flexibility, increase strength, and reduce stiffness and pain.
I've put together this three minute video for you so you can get your body moving and feeling better. I know you're busy, but try to do this practice mid-morning and again mid-afternoon. If you think your co-workers will benefit from this, please share it with them, too.
Now I'd love to hear from you! In the comments below, let me know your top tips for managing stress and tension at work. Do you make it a habit to eat lunch away from your desk? Do you go for a walk around your building to get some fresh air? What works for you?
Wishing you a happy neck an relaxed shoulders :)
