What Does Balance Mean to You?

When you hear the word "balance", what comes to mind? Physical equilibrium? Stability? An even distribution? Or maybe mental and emotional steadiness?

It's interesting that many of these descriptions outline the very elements needed when practicing a balancing asana (posture). Breath work and mental focus are often just as important as the physical strength and coordination required to find stability in a balancing pose.

Balance, like strength and flexibility, is a key factor in maintaining vitality as you age. Most of us find that our balance differs from day to day. Some days, you may feel a sense of being balanced, and others, you may notice instability in day-to-day movements, including walking, getting out of a chair, and leaning over to pick something up from the floor, to name a few.

By challenging your balance even just a little every day, you can build strength, steady your mind, and even prevent injuries by avoiding falls.

DIY Your Own Yoga Props at Home

Many of us have experienced change related to our yoga practice in the past year. You might be brand new to yoga, or you may be practicing yoga at home consistently for the first time. In any case, you may have noticed that many online yoga teachers incorporate yoga props into their instruction.

When thinking about the gear you might need to practice at home, keep in mind that a yoga prop is simply an object that is used to aid in the practice of yoga postures. Some of the most common yoga props you might come across are blocks, blankets, bolsters, and straps.

If you don't currently own one or more of these props, don't worry! You can DIY your own yoga props, substituting with just about anything, as long as you can use the object safely and comfortably to assist your practice.

Take a look at some of our DIY yoga prop suggestions, and let us know if you've found a substitute that you really enjoy using.
